[Class 34 (ii)] [See also Group XII] Hot coke discharged from ovens or retorts is cooled, prior to its delivery to a washing plant, by passage through a heat-exchanger in counter-current to and without admixture with wet clean coke supplied from the washing plant, the latter stream of coke being thereby dried. As shown, the heat-exchanger comprises concentric rotary drums A, D<1>, C, the hot coke being fed at H to the space G between the drums A, D<1>, and the wet coke from the washing plant entering the inner drum A through a shoot D. Cold air or gas may be passed through the space between the drums Dl, C, the former being formed, with fins or thimbles 0<2> to increase the surface of contact; the air or gas thus heated may pass, as shown by the arrows, into the inner drum A to assist in the drying of the wet coke therein. In the form shown, continuous or interrupted feed screws E, J and lifter blades El, J<1> are provided in the drum A and the space G respectively, but modifications are described in which the drums are inclined and a feeding screw provided only in the drum A or in the space G.
