[Class 28 ii)] In a slicing-machine, the substance is slid towards the cutting plane, over a support 22, Fig. 1, and is positioned between a fixed side wall 23 and a laterally adjustable member 24 which is supported by an arm 26 which extends above and across the substance. The member 24 is prevented from pivoting about the arm 26 by an auxiliary parallel arm which is engaged by a fork on the sleeve 35, the main arm 26 and the auxiliary arm being joined by a bridge 40. The member 24 is releasably clutched to the arm 26 by a tilting ring 37. The arm 25, carrying the main and auxiliary arms, is pivotally mounted on a shaft 28, screw-means operated by a handwheel 32 being provided to lock the arm 25 in any desired angular position. The member 24 may be pivoted to the sleeve 35 and pressed towards the wall 23 by a spring. In the modification shown in plan in Fig. 7, the main and auxiliary arms 61, 62 are tubular and are clamped between top and bottom parts of a casing 64 which is secured to an arm corresponding with the arm 25, Fig. 1, by a screw 67. Screws 66 secure the casing parts together. A pulley is arranged within the casing 64, journalled on the screw 67, and a coil spring 74 passes around the pulley, into the tubes 61, 62, one end of the spring being anchored at 73 whilst the other end is attached to a pin 75 on the sleeve 70 which carries the member corresponding with the member 24, Fig. 1. The pin 75 slides in a longitudinal slot in the tube 61. A latch 76 under the action of a spring 78, engages a pin 80 on the bridge piece 72, when the retention of the member 24 in a retracted position is desired. When the latch is released, the member 24 moves against the substance and is pressed resiliently against it during the feed. The arms 61, 62 are swung about the pivot 67 to an inoperative position when the substance is to be handled. The spring 74 may be replaced by a volute or flat spiral spring, the inner end of which is anchored to the pivot bolt 67 and the free end to the pin 75.
