Abstract

Arylamides are prepared by condensing 5.6.7.8 - tetrahydro - 2 - oxynaphthalene - 3 - carcarboxylic acid or a functional derivative thereof such as an acid halogenide or an ester with a primary aromatic mono- or diamine of the carbocyclic or heterocyclic series. Water-insoluble azo-dyes are prepared in substance or on the fibre by coupling these arylamides with diazo compounds free from solubilizing groups. In examples: (1) 5.6.7.8-tetrahydro-2-oxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid (prepared by treating an alkali metal salt of 5.6.7.8-tetrahydro-2-naphthol with carbon dioxide under pressure) is condensed with 1-aminonaphthalene and 3.3<1>-dimethoxy-4.4<1>-diaminodiphenyl; (2) the arylamide 3.3<1>-dimethoxy-4.4<1>-di (5<11>.6<11>.7<11>.8<11> - tetrahydro-2<11> oxynaphthalene-3<11>-carboyl)-aminodiphenyl is applied to cotton yarn from an alkaline solution containing turkey red oil and the dye developed with diazotized m-nitraniline (brown shades); the latter may be replaced by diazotized 5-nitro-2-aminomethoxybenzene or 5 - chloro - 2 - aminotoluene. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of dyes prepared (1) by coupling diazotized 5-nitro-2-anisidine with 1-(5<1>.6<1>.7<1>. 8<1>-tetrahydronaphthalene - 2<1> - oxy - 3<1> - carboylamino) - naphthalene; (2) by coupling diazotized 5-nitro-2-anisidine with 2-(5<1>.6<1>.7<1>.8-tetrahydronaphthalene - 2<1> - oxy - 3<1> - carboylamino)-carbazole.
