Abstract

448,258. Grinding-mills. CLARK, G., and CLARK, W., 8, Pryme Street, Kingstonupon-Hull. Dec. 4, 1934, No. 34781. [Class 59] In a mill for grinding, cutting, &c. materials a cooling or heating medium is passed both through a hollow rotor to contact with its periphery on which blades are circumferentially spaced to form the inner periphery of an annular treatment chamber for the material, and also through each of a plurality of hollow stationary blades circumferentially spaced apart about the axis of the rotor to constitute the outer periphery of the treatment chamber. As shown, the rotor 12 is provided with blades 11 and the stator with blades 13 to form an annular grinding chamber 10. The rotor is enclosed by discs 15 carrying fan blades 22 which induce air through spaces 20 surrounding the drive shaft 14 and force it past the ends of the rotor to form an air seal for the chamber 10 as described in Specification 441,650. The shaft 14 is bored at 28, 29 and 30, 31 for the entrance and exit respectively of cooling or heating fluid to the rotor 12, holes 19 being made in the web 18 for the passage of fluid from one side of the rotor to the other. The blades 13 are bored transversely and connected to inlet and outlet chambers 33, 34 respectively. The fluid may be passed through the rotor and stator in series, the bore 31 in the shaft 14 communicating by a passage to an annular ring in a double gland 32, Fig. 3, provided with end packing 39 and a pipe 38 leads the fluid to the stator. The fluid inlet connection to the shaft 14, Fig. 2, comprises a ring 24 loose on the shaft and a cap 25 with packing 27, the inlet pipe 26 being screwed into the cap. The air entering the rotor ends at 20 may be heated or cooled and the rotor may have radial webs at one or both ends with or without a centre partition. In treating sugar, the cooling medium may comprise liquid or gaseous carbon dioxide, ammonia, calcium chloride, brine or cold water. Steam or hot air may be used for heating purposes.
