[Class 74 (ii)] In order that the toe or other parts of stockings &c. may be narrowed and widened less abruptly than usual, needles which are moved from action during narrowing, or are restored to action during widening, are temporarily returned to action during said narrowing and /or withdrawn from action during widening. In the apparatus shown the widening picks 7 are controlled during the knitting of the stocking by a cam 47 through a lever 44, rod 48, lever 50 and push rod 9. During the knitting of the toe the end 46 of the lever 44 is in the cam recess 111 and the widening picks 7 are controlled by a separate pattern chain 15 provided with links 95 which act on the picks through the rod 48, a link 54, and a lever 59, 63. This chain 15 is operated through a ratchet wheel 18 and two pawls 20, 38 oscillated by a connection 24 from the lever which reciprocates the needle cylinder during knitting of the toe. Until toe knitting commences the pawl 38 is held out of action by a rod 83, 66 and the pawl 20 by a lug 93 on the chain 15. When toe knitting is to commence, i.e. when the lever end 46 drops into the cam recess 111, the end 77 of a lever 73 is raised by the cam 78 and the rod 83 and pawl 38 are lowered. After the wheel 18 has been moved a few teeth by the pawl 38 the cam 78 can lift the pawl 38 out of action, the pawl 20 then continuing to drive the wheel 18 until the knitting of the toe part is completed when the lug 93 will again lift the pawl 20 out of action. During widening, the recesses 100 between the links 98, 99 allow the widening picks to be temporarily withdrawn at intervals. The links 95 are stepped at 951 to move the picks in stages and thus prevent damage to needle &c. butts. The arrangement of links shown in Fig. 11 will give a toe. Another arrangement will give a toe as shown in Fig. 15. Instead of controlling only the widening picks the narrowing picks or both the narrowing and the widening picks may be controlled.
