Abstract
Aliphatic acids which have been made by oxidation of aldehydes are separated from the reaction mixture by fractional distillation and then treated by aeration in presence of an oxidizing catalyst to remove residual impurities, after which the acid may be distilled to free it from the catalyst. Suitable catalysts are vanadium salts, vanadium oxide, and ammonium metavanadate. Acids mentioned are acetic, propionic, butyric, caproic, and 2-ethylbutyric acids. The purification treatment may be effected in a vertical aluminium vessel heated by a steam coil and provided with a reflux condenser. The temperature may be 90--120 DEG C. Pressure may be employed.
