Nov. 15, 1935, No. 31656. Convention date, Aug. 3. [Class 108 (i)] A sheet-metal vehicle body is constructed of a number of subassembly units comprising side front, rear and roof units, the roof units extending from the front over the top and downwardly at the rear to include one or more window openings such as the rear window. The units are adapted for ready packing for shipment and are provided with marginal flanges &c. whereby they may be easily assembled and jointed by simple spot welding. Fig. 2 shows one form comprising side units A extending from and including the side parts of the cowl 28 to a vertical margin at the rear of the quarter window and including part of the wheel housing, a front unit B including the top of the cowl and the windshield framing, a roof unit D extending from the windshield header to the waist line at the rear of the quarter window and a rear unit c. Fig. 4 shows the top of the side unit above the door opening and comprises a channel form 29, 33 closed on the inner side by a reinforcing plate 34. Fig. 5 shows the side unit above the rear quarter window the closing plate 34 being outwardly bent to form with the side panel 27 a rebate 30 for the window frame. Fig. 9 shows the side panel 29, 29<1> at the door threshold part, a closing plate 37 being provided and the panel being extended inwardly to joint with the floor plate 40. The roof panel 10 at its side margins above the door openings is formed with a rabbet 12, 14, Fig. 4, and together with a drip moulding 16 is welded to the side panel a door jamb of rubber being held by the drip moulding as shown at 13a Above the window opening the roof panel is inwardly flanged at 15, Fig. 5, and together with the drip moulding is welded to the side panel. The roof panel is provided with sound deadening strip 26 &c. secured thereto. The side units are connected at the front by the front unit comprising a wind shield header 51, Figs. 3, 23<a> which is connected to the side panels by angular gussets 59, 60 the header also carrying by channel strips 56 a roof bow 55 which is connected to the side panels by brackets 58. The front unit comprises the top of the cowl which is connected to the side cowl portions by inturned flanges and the uprights 48, Figs. 7 and 23, connected to the header 51, the uprights 48 cover the channel section portion 29, 33 of the side panel to form the A posts, the side panel being reinforced by an inner channel 35. The rear unit C is connected to the roof unit D and to the side unit A by flanges 61, 70, 21. In other forms the roof panel may comprise also the front unit or the rear unit or both. The wheel housing plate may be integral with or connected to the appropriate unit.
