Abstract

In making a composite body consisting of a portion of nickel or nickel alloy, or alloy steel welded to an iron or steel backing, the film of oxide is first removed from the face of the first portion and this face is then electroplated with iron while free of such film and prior to welding. The surface may be first cleaned by grinding, sandblasting or pickling and is then given a final pickling in a non-oxidizing acid such as hydrochloric acid. In one form, a pair of plates of stainless steel containing 18 per cent of chromium and 8 per cent of nickel with an intervening layer of talc and sodium nitrate and with welded edges, are given a preliminary alkali or solvent cleaning, and after rinsing, the plates are placed in hydrochloric acid, preferably a 35-37 per cent solution for five or six minutes until bubbles rise freely from every part. The plates are then removed, brushed and washed and placed in the acid again for about 15 secs. While wet they are transferred to the plating bath. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a modification in which the plates are cleaned by anode pickling for ten minutes in acid of 18 per cent strength and at room temperature with a voltage of 6. After scrubbing and washing, they are returned to the bath for one minute and then transferred to the plating bath. In a further form, a high-speed steel containing 18 per cent of tungsten is given a preliminary alkali anodic pickle in a bath containing 150 grams of sodium hydroxide and 15 grams of citric acid to the litre and with a current density of 2,7 amperes per square decimeter. After scrubbing and rinsing, the plate is dipped in hydrochloric acid of 18 per cent strength and then transferred to the plating bath. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
