Abstract

446,267. Making pile carpets &c. SADLER, A., 65, Temple Row, Birming- ham.-(Brinton, C. C. ; Quebec, Canada) Sept. 26, 1934, No. 27564. [Classes 142 (ii) and 142 (iv)] Lengths of tuft yarn i are extracted from carriers at the right, and after being cut off from the supply are transferred into a position at the left for planting or embodiment in a backing, by two sets of grippers a<3>, a4 at opposite sides of a shaft a<2>. This is rotated in steps of 180‹ to bring the two sets successively into tuft extracting and tuft planting positions and is held stationary for a time after each semi-rotation. The grippers comprise fixed jaws a<3> formed on plates fixed side by side on the shaft a<2> and movable jaws a<4> pivoted on spindles a<5> carrying tappets c<1> operated by cams on side members of the frame to open and close the jaws. After these have closed on the yarns, the carrier and cutter assembly b is traversed bodily to withdraw the yarns by means of a cam h and lever h<1>. The yarns are then cut. A modification is described in which the fixed jaws comprise a one piece member, which is slotted to accommodate the moving jaws. According to the Provisional Specification, the tufts are placed in the grooves of a locating plate, are folded and doubled by means of planting needles, and the doubled tufts are inserted in holes &c. in a rubber backing, which may be reinforced by fabric: The backing is fed by let off and take up rollers and is supported underneath, during the tuft planting operation, by a vertically moving perforated gripper-plate.,
