Abstract
446,185. Cam mechanism. LILES, T. O., 711, East 11th Street, Dallas, Texas, U.S.A. Nov. 2, 1934, No. 31484. [Class 80 (iii)] Means for converting reciprocating into rotary motion and vice versa comprises shaft and sleeve members having complementary or coacting endless cam grooves each of wavelike form and anti-friction bearing means operating in said grooves. A member 15 connected by rods 14 to a source of power, carries a sleeve 10 adapted to reciprocate over a shaft 11 supported in a frame 21 by ball bearings 23 and provided, e.g. with a flywheel 13. The shaft may however be the driving and the sleeve the driven member. The sleeve is formed internally with a number of endless wave-like grooves 24, preferably of harmonic shape, and semicircular in crosssection and the shaft 11 is formed with similar grooves 25. In the spaces formed by opposed grooves are located two rows of balls 20 maintained in position by a thin spacing cylinder 18 between sleeve and shaft. With the arrangement shown, the sleeve moves axially twice the axial distance moved by the balls and two strokes, forward and back, are completed for one revolution of the shaft. The number of crests in the grooves may be varied to vary the relative motion of sleeve and shaft. The inertia of the moving parts tends to free the balls from dead centres, and the harmonic form of the grooves tends to reduce shocks. In the above mechanism, the balls are of the freely floating or drifting type as distinct from mechanisms where the ball is fixed relatively to one of the members, and it is due to this that the movement of the sleeve relative to the balls is increased.
