445,974. Moulding polystyrol tubes. SIEMENS - SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.- GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Feb. 12, 1935, No. 4555. Convention date, Feb. 13, 1934. [Class 87 (ii)] In moulding continuous tubular lengths of polystyrol so as to give reduced brittleness and increased flexibility, a tube 13 of crosssection smaller than that desired is extruded and gradually expanded while still thermoplastic by means of internal fluid pressure. It may then, if necessary, be cooled. A tube extrusion press 12 may co-operate with a moulding conduit 16 having a gradually increasing cross-section. Compressed air may be introduced by a pipe 14 so as to expand the tube 13 against the conduit 16. An intermediate tube 15, which may be cooled, may support the tube 13 between the press and the conduit. Alternatively, the tube 13 may be allowed to expand, unconfined, between the press and the conduit and the initial cross-section of the conduit accordingly enlarged. A cooling tube 17 may be provided at the outlet end of the conduit. The tube 13 may be corrugated or indented by the conduit 16 or by separate devices, and it may be fed forward by caterpillar devices. The tubes 15, 16 may be lubricated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of substances similar to polystyrol in the polyvinyl or other hydrocarbon groups and also a method wherein a preformed body of polystyrol or like substance is placed on a blowing nozzle within a hollow mould and is expanded by compressed air into contact with the mould. The body may be heated prior to blowing or by using hot compressed air. A partial vacuum may be produced in the mould. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
