Abstract
445,684. Testing hollow-ware for fluid-tightness. WILSDORF, H., 18, Rue du MarchÚ, Geneva. Nov. 4, 1935, No. 30430. Convention date, Nov. 10, 1934. [Class 106 (ii)] A transparent receptacle 1 adapted to contain a liquid is provided with supporting means for placing the article to be tested-a watch caseinto the liquid, and wherein means are provided for creating a vacuum above the liquid level in the receptacle whereby air bubbles from leaky cases may be observed. The receptacle is constituted by a glass cylinder 5 clamped between a ring 7 and a base 2 by means of screws 7b and suitable gaskets 6, 8 to secure tightness. The bottom of the receptacle is formed by a diaphragm 4 clamped between the base 2 and a frame 3. The diaphragm passes between discs 9, 10, the disc 9 carrying an annular rim 11 guided in the base 2 while a connecting rod 12 through slots 14 in which passes a shaft 15 is secured to the discs. To the shaft is keyed an eccentric 17 co-operating with rollers 18 mounted in the rod 12. The cover 7a carries a stuffing box through which passes a tube 23 at the bottom of which is a hook 21 on which the article is suspended. In use, the cover is removed and the article placed on the hook 21, the receptacle being filled with water when the parts are reassembled. The shaft 15 is now turned so that the diaphragm takes up the position shown in dotted lines, when if the case leaks, bubbles of air will rise through the liquid to the vacuum above. To prevent the diaphragm being inadvertently returned and water getting inside the case, the shaft 15 is locked by a locking pin 27 on a lever 26 being urged by a spring 28 against an eccentric 29 on the shaft. After the test, the tube 20 is moved upwards so that the hole 24 register with hole 25 in the stuffing box and hence with the atmosphere. The shaft is unlocked by retracting lever 26 by hand against the influence of the spring. A pump may evacuate a portion of the water in the vessel or the latter may be partly filled and an air pump used to exhaust the air above the liquid.
