Abstract

445,471. Springs. LAMPLUGH, H. A., 10, Manor Park Crescent, Edgware, Middlesex, and LAMPLUGH SPRING SEATS, Ltd., 8, Sergeants Inn, Fleet Street, London. Oct. 6, 1934, No. 28681. [Class 108 (iii)] A uniplanar slat spring for use in upholstery, cushions, &c. comprises a strip of spring steel bent to form a main load-receiving part 3, Fig. 2, and a primary supporting part 4 arranged at an acute angle to each other so as to be capable of relative movement about the bend towards one another, the supporting part normally spacing the adjacent end of the main part from the plywood, strip metal, or other support for the spring which has an attachment portion 6, 7 at each extremity and is asymmetrical as a whole about any plane transverse to the longitudinal plane of the spring. The attachment portions 6, 7 each have a single bolt &c. hole, or, in the case of the end springs of a spring unit, a pair of holes are provided in the attachment portions. Alternatively the securing means may consist of nails, rivets, or clips, or welding may be employed, or a combination of these means. In another construction, Fig. 15, the spring may have a secondary supporting part 27 shorter than the part 4. Fig. 20 shows a spring having a V-shaped primary supporting part 4 and a secondary supporting part 27. Alternatively to the latter part the main part 3 may be curved at one end 39 or may extend direct to the supporting portion at that end. The springs may be shaped from previously hardened and tempered steel strip having a Brinell hardness of between 415 and 525. Figs. 9, 11 show two forms of spring particularly for a seat-back adapted to be used with a seat unit having springs in accordance with the invention, the spring shown in Fig. 9 having a straight attachment portion 21 at each end at an acute angle with the main portion 20, while that shown in Fig. 11 has curved and straight attachment portions 15, 14 at its ends. Fig. 14 illustrates a complete spring seat the back springs 44, of which may be replaced by any one of the forms illustrated in Fig. 20. When a bucket type of back squab is employed, the springs of the seat cushion may increase in length from the sides towards the centre of the cushion. The springs may be screwed to a trimming strip comprising a channel-section metal strip enclosing fibre, papier mÔchÚ, &c., to which the final seat covering may be secured.
