12 Claims. (01. 155-131) This invention relates to improvements spring structures.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved spring structure having a top border frame which is effective in supporting the upholstery, efiectively resists stresses applied in a horizontal direction, and at the same time may be formed of light stock.
Second, to provide a border frame for spring structures which may be readily constructed in any desired outline for the purpose of supporting the upholstery or providing a cushion structure ofv desired shape, and at the same time one which may be readily applied to a spring structure.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of spring assembly are connected by the crossed helical tie members 3.

Corresponding portions of these inner and outer members-are arranged in spaced substantially parallel relation. They-are rigidly and fixedly connected by-the spaced strut or tie memhers I 3 which are ofsheet metal stampings and Fig. 10 is a fragmentary plan view of still another form or embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 11 is a section on line H-li of Fig. 10.
In the accompanying drawings the body springs i are of the helical type mounted on a suitable base including cross members 2. The base frame is not illustrated and only portions of the springs of substantial width so that they form effective strut or brace members which also have a tie action as well as a bracing action against wracking movement of the frame members. The ends M of these strut members are folded around the frame members into clampingengagement there-' with.
The strut members in the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 have oppositely disposed offsets IS in the side edges thereof whichprovide shoulders 16 in supporting engagement with the adjacent edges of the frame member see Figs.
2, 3 and 4. Overlapping portions of the strut members are preferably secured to the frame members as indicated at I I. This may be accomplished by providing the clamping ties with suitable prick-punch projections embedded in the frame members. The offsetting shown in this embodiment provides substantially spaced frame member engaging shoulders which is of advantage in that an effective bracing action results, also a more effective engagement of the parts than results where the offsets extend entirely or substantially across the struts.
In Fig. 5 the extreme edges 2| of 'the'parts M which are clamped around the frame members are folded or turned inwardly into abutting engagement with shoulders Hi.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the strut members l8 have offsets I9 of substantially greater depth and of general rectangular outline Patent is:

In the embodiment of Figs. 8 and'9 the intermediate portion23 of the strut members 22 is longitudinally curved and tongue-like portions 24 are struckout therefrom to provide frame member engaging lugs. These parts 24 may be struck outbefore the strut members are applied or during the operation of applying thestrut members, I
In the embodiment shown in Figs. and 11 the strut members 25 have a, central intermediate portion 26 thereof offset to provide the shoula ders 21 which are in supporting engagement with the adjacent edges of the frame members. I
The border frame shown in Fig. 1A is asn sembled as a complete frame or unit to be applied to the spring assembly in completing or assembling the structure. A frame for spring structures comprising a continuous, outer border member comprising front, rear and'end portions, an inner frame member having front and end-portions disposed in spaced relation to the front and end portions of the outer frame member, the ends of the side portions of the inner member being secured to the end portions of the outer member adjacent the rear ends thereof,'and strut members connecting said outer and inner frame memberasaid strut membersbeing sheet metal stampings of substantial width having the ends thereof clamped upon saidframe members, intermediate portions of said strut members being offset to provide shoulders engaging the adjacent edges of said frame members and coacting with the portions of the strut members clamped around said frame member fixedly engaging the frame members.

A frame for spring structures comprising a continuous horizontally disposed outer border member formed'of flat wire stock and comprising front, rear and end portions, a horizontally disposedinner frame member also formed of flat wire stock and having front and end portions disposed in spaced relation to the front and end portion'sof the outer frame member, said frame members being disposed with their flat sides horizontal, the. ends of the side portions of the inner member being secured to the end portions of the outer-member, and strut members con-- necting said outer and inner frame members, said strut members being sheet metal'stampings having flat surfaces parallel to and engaging the fiat sides of said frame members and-having the ends thereof clamped upon said framemembers and rigidly engaging the latter to prevent relative rotation of the strut and frame members at the clamped connection, intermediate portions of said strut members being conformed to bracingly engage the adjacent edges of said frame prising inner and outer border members of flat members.

A border frame for spring structures comwire stock disposed in spaced relation with their v flat sides-horizontal, and strut members conmeeting said outer and inner frame members, said strut members being sheet metal stampings of substantial width and having oppositely disposed offsets at the side edges thereof, 'theends of which constitute spaced pairs of shoulders which are in'bracing engagement with the adjaupright body springs, of a border frame comprising a continuous border member comprising 'cent edges of the frame members, the ends of said str ut members being folded around said frame members in clamping relation therewith rigidly engaging the latter to prevent relative rotationof the strut and frame members at the clamped connection, parts of said strut members overlapping said frame member being embeddingly secured thereto.
6. A border frame for spring structures comprising inner and outer border members of fiat wire stock disposed in spaced relation with their fiat sides horizontal, and strut members connecting said outer and inner frame members, said strut members being sheet metal stampings of substantial width and having oppositely disposed oilsets at the side edges thereof, the ends of which constitute pairs of shoulders which are in bracing engagement with the adjacent edges of the frame members, the ends of said strut members being folded around said frame members in clamping relation therewith.
7. A border frame for spring structures comprising inner and outer border members of fiat ment with the adjacent edges of the frame members, the ends of said strut members being clamped around said frame members in rotation-resistant relation to opposed sides thereof.
10. A border frame for spring structures comprising inner and outer border members of flat section disposed in spaced substantially parallel relation with their flat sides horizontal, and
wire stock disposed in spaced relation with their fiat sides horizontal, and strut members connecting said outer and inner frame members, said strut members being sheet metal stampings of substantial width and having oppositely disposed offsets at the side edges thereof, the ends of which constitute spaced pairs of shoulders which are in bracing engagement with the adjacent edges of the frame members, the ends of said strut members being folded around said frame members in clamping relation therewith with the edges thereof turned inwardly into abutting relation to said shoulders. i

A border frame for spring structures comprising horizontally disposed inner and outer members of flat section disposed in spaced relation with their flat sides horizontal, and strut members of sheet metal connecting said frame members atspaced intervals and having offsets intermediate said frame members providing pairs of spaced shoulders which are in engagement with the adjacent edges of the frame members, the ends of said strut members being clamped upon said frame members and rigidly engaging the latter to prevent relative rotation of the strut and frame members at the clamped connection.

A border frame for spring structures comprising inner and outer members of angular secstrut members of sheet metal connecting said frame members at spaced intervals, said strut members having portions thereof struck up to provide frame member engaging portions, the ends of said strut members having flat surfaces parallel to and engaging the flat sides of said frame members and being clamped upon said frame members and rigidly engaging the latter to prevent relative rotation of the strut and frame members at the clamped connection.

A border frame for spring structures comprising horizontally disposed inner and outer border members of fiat section disposed in spaced relation with their flat sides horizontal, and strut members connecting said frame members at spaced intervals and formed of sheet metal pieces of substantial width having the ends thereofprovided with flat surfaces parallel to and engaging the fiat sides of the side members and clamped upon said side members, and oppositely disposed intermediate portions thereof offset to provide spaced shoulders which are in bracing engagement with the inner edges of the frame members.

A border frame for spring structures comprising horizontally disposed inner and outer border members of fiat section disposed in spaced relation with their flat sides horizontal, and strut members connecting said frame members at spaced intervals and formed of sheet metal pieces ing the latter to prevent relative rotation of tion disposed in spaced relation, and strut mem- I the strut and frame members at the clamped connection, and intermediate portions thereofconformed to provide portions in supporting engagement with the inner edges of the frame members.
