Abstract

Lustrous fibrous materials particularly artificial silk, which have been darkly dyed are delustred by precipitating thereon substances giving rise to cations capable of reducing the surface tension together with tanning agents or dye-wood extracts and iron salts. The articles may be treated with a quaternary high molecular ammonium or phosphonium compound, a high molecular ternary sulphonium compound, asymmetric oleyl-diethyl-ethylene-diamine, substances known under the Registered Trade Mark "Sapamin," iso-urea or iso-thiourea substituted by high molecular organic residues, addition products of high molecular alkyl or aryl halogenides with hexamethylene tetramine, or high molecular alkyl or aryl guanidines, these substances all giving rise to cations which reduce the surface tension. The goods may be saturated with a solution of one of these substances together with an iron salt, centrifuged or pressed and dried, and then treated with tanning material or dyewood extract. The iron salt may be omitted from the first bath and employed after the tanning bath. The tanning agent or extract for black materials may be chestnut wood extract, valonia extract, sumach, and gall nut extract. For green materials, gambier, fustic, or quebracho extract may be used. For blue materials, logwood extract, and for red materials, redwood extract may be used. Mixtures of these extracts or synthetic tanning materials may also be used. The delustred materials may be treated with soap solution at raised temperature. In an example, hanks of black-dyed viscose artificial silk are treated with a warm solution of dodecyl pyridinium sulphate and ferric chloride. They are wrung out and treated with a solution of chestnut wood extract, rinsed or soaped. In another example, hanks of blue-dyed viscose artificial silk are treated with dodecyl pyridinium bromide and ferric chloride solution, wrung out, treated with logwood extract, and then heated with soap solution.
