[Class 38 (iv)] [See also Group XXXVII] In a control system for engine-electric vehicles having a variable voltage generator 1 supplying one or more traction motors 16, 17, delayed action relays 18, 19, inserted in the motor armature circuits, are arranged to control means for operating the generator field regulator. The field 2 of the generator 1 is resistance regulated by means of a controller 4 operated by a split-field pilot motor 6 controlled by the relays 18, 19, through an electromagnetic relay device having coils 12, 13. The relays 18, 19, may be of the thermal or oil-brake type. If, while a controller 10 or 11 is operated, the motor currents exceed a. certain value for a longer period than is desirable, relay contacts 20, 21 open, the coil 12 is de-energized and the circuit to the pilot motor is interrupted, so that no further increase of the generator voltage takes place. Upon a greater increase of the motor currents relay contacts 22, 23, are closed, the coil 13 energized, and the pilot motor connected for reverse rotation so that the generator voltage is decreased. Similar control of the pilot motor 6 is exercised by a device 24 operated by the engine governor upon different degrees of excess loading of the prime-mover.
