444,712. Well-drilling bits. ZUBLIN, J. A., 2369, East 51st Street, Los Angeles, U.S.A. Sept. 25, 1934, No. 35863. Divided out of 444,696. [Class 85] A cutter for a drill as described in Specification 444,696 comprises a bowlshaped body 20 with a cylindrical bearing surface 15alpha merging into a conical bearing surface 24, the angle at the apex of the cone being such that when the axis of the cutter is at about 30‹ to the vertical, the surface of the cone slopes downwardly and inwardly at all parts ; the angle is preferably 90‹. The body 20 has cutter blades 42 comprising a lower digging portion of triangular section and an upper reaming portion of rectangular section with one or more transverse cutting edges ; the reaming teeth lie on a sphere with centre D, while the digging portions of the blades lie within and eccentric to the sphere. Preferably, alternate blades have one reaming tooth which is the counterpart of the lowest of a number of teeth on each intermediate blade. Each cutter has an internal ball-receiving groove 47 of greater width than depth, and a notch in its rim for the insertion of locking means.
