Abstract

444,651. Cash registers. EMBERSON, F., 149, Maple Road, Penge, London. Oct. 30, 1934, No. 31117. Addition to 397,660. [Class 106 (i)] Autographic arrangements ; totals, taking.- The autographic strip according to Specifications 397,660 and 418,681, upon which the amount found in the till is noted prior to the disclosure of the total, is now advanced, to render the note made thereon invisible, by the operation of total printing or indicating mechanism other than unlocking or access giving devices. Conversely, the operation of the strip feeding means may actuate the total printing or indicating mechanism. In Fig. 3 the invention is shown applied to a cash register of the kind wherein a total is printed by rocking a printing frame 1 about a shaft 2, a platen 5 becoming operative at the end of the rocking movement to print the total on a record strip movable with the frame. Situated laterally of the record strip is an autographic strip 19 upon which the operator enters the amount in the till prior to taking a total. The strip is supported in a fixed frame 22 and passes from a supply roll 20, over a writing plate 25 to a storage roll 21. In order to remind the operator to enter the amount on the strip, rocking of the printing frame to take a total is normally prevented by an arm 30a of a lid 30 that must be unlocked and swung open to give access to the writing aperture 26 and free the printing frame. The autographic strip is stepped forward during total-taking by a pawl 33 carried by an arm 34 and operated by a link 36 pivoted to the printing-frame 1. In a modification, the arm 34 is extended past its pivotal axis 35 to form a handle 73, clockwise rocking of which serves both to feed the autographic strip and rock the frame 1 to take a total. In a further modification, Fig. 5, an operating handle 74 is fast on a shaft 76 carried by one of the fixed frame plates 22, counterclockwise rocking of the handle serving through an arm 75 and pawl 33<c> to feed the autographic strip, and through a slotted arm 77 and stud 78 to rock the platen arm 6 and frame 1 to take a total. In Fig. 4, the invention is shown applied to a cash register of the kind wherein a platen 45a is operated to print a total on a record strip 61 upon the depression of a totaltaking key 39. The platen is operated by a bell-crank 42 driven by a cam 41 on the usual key-rotated shaft 41. On the depression of the total-taking key, a pitman 54 is lowered to remove a projection 55 thereon from the path of a stud 56 on the platen, thus allowing the latter to follow the bell-crank and be returned operatively to print from the totalizer 40. An autographic strip 19 is arranged rearwardly of the record strip on supply and storage rolls 20, 21 and is accessible through a writing aperture 26 after the unlocking and raising of a lid 27. The strip is stepped forward during total-taking by a pawl 33a operatively connected through a link 68 and lever 69 to the pitman 54. In a modification, the total-taking key is dispensed with and the strip fed and total printed by rocking a handle 78 on the pawl arm 33b, this movement serving through a free-wheel device (not shown) to rotate the shaft 41. The Specification also states that the autographic strip may be fed from the platen, or by movement of the totalizer to a visible position.
