Abstract

444,582. Electric endosmose. INTERNATIONAL LATEX PROCESSES, Ltd., 10, Lefebvre Street, St. Peter's Port, Guernsey. Sept. 21, 1934, No. 27157. Convention date, Oct. 10, 1933. [Class 41] [See also Groups V and VIII] In a process of mechanically spreading, coating, extruding, &c. an aqueous dispersion of rubber &c. by means of a confining or shaping member, an electrical potential difference is maintained between the shaping member and the dispersion, the charge on the said member being similar in sign to the charge of the disperse phase of the dispersion. The potential difference produces an accumulation of water adjacent the shaping member which acts as a lubricant. As shown, a sheet of fabric 1 to be coated is passed over a roll 2 and under a spreader bar 3 which is insulated from the rest of the apparatus and is connected to the negative pole of a direct current supply when an alkaline dispersion is used. The positive pole is connected to the roll 2 by a lead 5. A wetting roll 7 is provided to moisten the fabric 1, preferably with an electrolyte solution. As modifications, the positive pole of the current supply may be connected to an electrode immersed in the dispersion 6 or to a roll making electrical contact with the surface of the material 1 after it has been moistened bv the roll 7. In the case of positively charged dispersions, such as acid latex, the electrical connections are reversed. Potentials up to 220 volts may be used. When coating a wire in an extrusion die the potential may be applied between the wire and the die, and for producing threads, sheets, &c. the die is insulated from the body of the machine and maintained at a negative potential. Specification 422,516, [Group VIII], is referred to.
