Abstract
In a stillhead for fractional distillation comprising a number of superposed planes connected in series or in parallel and completely filling the horizontal cross-section of the column, the liquid is in the form of a thin film beneath a vapour stream of low <PICT:0444014/III/1> <PICT:0444014/III/2> <PICT:0444014/III/3> height and relative movement between liquid and vapour takes place. The path of the channels may take the form of intermittently ascending planes connected by short vertical or inclined steps, substantially horizontal planes only, or slightly continuously ascending planes. Eight units each constructed in this manner are laterally assembled in a column above a kettle 5, the sides of which incorporate steam, hot water, gas or electric heaters 8. Receivers 6 for each unit may be arranged for collecting the fractions and in this distillation of substances of high boiling point the cover 11 may be heated. The channels may be formed between plates arranged as a continually ascending helix, as shown in Fig. 7, the liquid reflux descending beneath the ascending film of vapour. The stillhead may be shut off from the kettle by a tight checkvalve, the liquid in the stillhead being then fractionated under pressure or vacuum. In a modification, Fig. 4, in which the channels take the form of horizontal planes or continuously ascending planes, the planes have a common inlet and outlet, the latter leading to an adjoining air, oil, water or brine cooler 28. The planes may be roughened, corrugated or covered with a thin layer of a fibrous material such as cotton, silk, glass or asbestos or slag wool or coated with a layer of colloidal material such as absorption carbon or silica gel. The reflux is enhanced by allowing such covering material to overhang from one plate to a lower one. In examples, light oil is fractionated to give carbon disulphide, benzol, toluol and xylol and crude anthracene to give dimethyl naphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, pure anthracene, phenanthrene, carbazol and fluoranthene. In each example, the stillhead is shut off from the kettle when filled with a suitable mixture of fractions, and the latter then separated by decreasing the pressure. The stillhead is kept at suitable temperature such as by a hot inert gas.
