Abstract

Foodstuffs, delicacies or like materials are preserved and prevented from sweating by enclosure in sheets or bags or other containers made of one or more layers of paper, cellulose derivatives, vellum paper or woven material united with one or more layers of pectin or other pectic substance carrying or having incorporated in it a sterilizing agent, e.g. sodium benzoate. The pectin &c. may be applied to one or both sides of the base material, e.g. in an aqueous solution containing also sugar and sodium benzoate, by roller presses which allow the amount added to be regulated, followed by drying or heated rollers. Two or more layers of the same or different base materials may be joined and then coated with the pectin &c. layer, e.g. a sheet of regenerated cellulose may be united to one of acetyl cellulose without reducing the transparency of the base. The pectin &c. layer may be disposed next to the food. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the preparation of the sheets &c. without addition of the sterilizing agent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
