Abstract
443,828. Making wire bars. AMERICAN SMELTING & REFINING CO., 120, Broadway, New York, U.S.A. Sept. 30, 1935, No. 26971. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1934. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] Milling-machines.-A process for producing a metal casting such as copper, brass or aluminium wire bar consists in casting the wire as usual in a horizontal mould, milling off the oxidized surface of the cast bar and further milling the sharp edges along the sides of the milled surface to produce rounded or bevelled edges extending along the entire length of the casting. The cast bars 4 with tapered ends are mounted in pairs on a reciprocating table 2 provided with pneumatically-operated clamping and straightening devices 3. A pair of motors 5, 5 are carried on mountings 13 slidable in inclined guides on the base and adjusted to and from each other by means of a hand-operated crossshaft 10 and worm gearing 8, 9. The milling- spindles 18 are driven from the motors by reducing gears 16 and carry cutters 19, which during automatic reciprocation of the table remove the scale from each of the bars 4. The edges of the bar adjacent the milled surface are rounded off by means of a pair of cutters 20, Fig. 4, splined on a cross-shaft 21 driven by worm gearing 34, 37 from the milling spindles 18. The chips from the operation drop into troughs 25 and may be removed by conveyers (not shown). The bar clamping means include serrated members 26, 27 and a pneumaticallyoperated yoke 29 carrying pins 28 which engage the upper surface of the bar. The rounding cutters 20 may be slid along their supporting shaft by forked members 40 to enable these cutters to follow the taper of the bar ends.
