Abstract

<PICT:0443545/III/1> In the process for extracting mineral oils with a general naphthenic solvent such as nitrobenzene in the presence of a paraffinic solvent as described in the parent Specification, the naphthenic solvent consists of a solvent dissolving a wider range of components than nitrobenzene, together with a solvent which dissolves a limited range of components, whereby the naphthenic and paraffinic components in the oil are more selectively separated. A mineral oil flows into the centre of an extraction column as shown in the Figure; the paraffinic solvent enters at the bottom and a mixture of the broad and narrow range naphthenic solvents at the top. Broad range solvents specified are, benzene, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone; benzyl, amyl, butyl or propyl alcohol; butyl ethyl or methyl acetate; ether, ethyl lactate, or malonate; wood tar acids, cresylic acid, nitrotoluene, or eugenol. Limited solvents specified are, furfurol, aniline, pyridine, sulphur dioxide, guaiacol, b -b <1> dichlorethyl ether, or benzaldehyde. Paraffinic solvents specified are, gasoline, petroleum ether or liquefied normally gaseous hydrocarbons such as propane or butane.
