Abstract
443,419. Chucks; bar-feeds. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd., Cheston Road, Aston, Birming- ham.-(Timken Roller Bearing Co. ; Denber Avenue, Canton, Ohio, U.S.A.) Sept. 21, 1935, No. 26197. [Class 83 (iii)] In an automatic lathe &c. for operating on profiled bar stock B comprising a number of articles B<1> attached end to end by necks 1, the stock is gripped by a spring collet 4 advanced and retracted in a bevelled cap 6 by a draw-spindle 8 and is fed to present each article in turn to the forming and cutting- off tools by means of a spring feeding-sleeve 9 attached to a reciprocating feeding-tube 10 and slidable within the rear end of the collet. The operations of the machine are synchronized so that whilst the collet 4 is gripping the stock the sleeve 9 is drawn rearwardly, the conical surface 11 of the spring fingers riding over a collar 2 of the stock, and whilst the collet is open the sleeve 9 is advanced, the ends of the fingers then engaging behind the collar 2 to feed the stock until its newly formed end engages a feed stop E. The stop has a conical internal shoulder 13 for engaging the collars 2 of the stock and is recessed at 14 to clear the cut-off end of the stock. The collet 4 is provided with elongated serrated jaws 7 for gripping the collars 2 on the stock. Specification 443,478, which describes several forms of profiled bar stock such as B, is referred to.
