[Class 40 (iii)] In a printer in which the typewheel is set by a pulley system, the pulleys are controlled by a single receiving magnet through permutation bars. The typewheel 15, Fig. 2, is positioned by a rack 9 which is drawn by a spring 13 against the tension of a steel tape 5. The tape passes over a pulley 6 integral with the rack 9 and has one end attached to a pin 7 on the mounting 81 of the next pulley 6<1>, while its other end is attached to a crank pin 4 on a disc 3 which can occupy two positions corresponding to a mark and a space respectively. The pulley 6<1> is similarly positioned, against the pull of a spring 13<1>, by a steel tape attached at one end to a crank pin 41 on a disc 3<1> and at its other end to a pin 7<1> on the mounting 811 of the next pulley 7<11>, and in all there are five pulleys of which three are shown. Each disc 3 by which a pulley is positioned is released for half a revolution by a corresponding escapement lever Fig. 1, (not shown) at each movement of a corresponding permutation bar. Alternatively, Fig. 3, the disc 3 may be adapted to be clutched to and driven through half a revolution by a constantly rotating pinion 18 each time that the pawl 21, pivoted on the disc, is permitted to engage the pinion by release of its tail on the actuation of one or other lever 23, 24 by a marking or spacing signal. Disc 3 is checked by a lever 28 engaging in one or other of the notches 30, 31.
