Abstract

442,443. Calculating-apparatus. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO., Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A. Aug. 7, 1934, No. 22826. Convention date, Nov. 1, 1933. [Class 106 (i)] A calculating-machine having an adding and subtracting totalizer, a total key, and a subtotal key normally used in conjunction with the total key for taking a sub-total, the total key being locked upon the occurrence of an overdraft in the totalizer, is provided with means operated upon the depression of the sub-total key to disable the locking means for the total key. The invention is shown applied to a machine of the Ellis type as described in Specifications 28253 /08, [Class 106], and 241,983, [Class 106 (i)], comprising the usual operating plate 12 with flying lever 14 controlling the engagement of the totalizer with the actuating racks 27. When the total key 29 is depressed, a latch 31 rocks so that a pin 32 moves the total-taking cams 36, 37 into the path of the flying lever 14. The total key 29 is released upon the anticlockwise or return movement of the plate 12 by a stud 28 which tends to rock clockwise a lever 45 pivoted to a release bar 38. The upper end of the lever 45 engages a pin 47 whereby the bar 38 is moved to the left so that its lug 48 releases the latch 31. During its first or clockwise movement the plate 12 turns anticlockwise a lever 43 pivoted at 42 whereby a bar 53 is moved to the left. To take a sub-total, the total key 29 and the sub-total key 49 are both depressed. The latter key inserts member 51 between a pin 52 on the bar 38 and a pin 57 on the bar 53. The bar 38 is thus moved to the left with the bar 53 to release the total key and so remove the cam 37 from the path of the lever 14 to allow the taking of a sub-total. If an overdraft occurs, a shaft 58 rocks anticlockwise to insert a latch 64 into the jaw of a lever 65 pivoted to the total-key stem and normally held by a spring in the position shown in Fig. 1, the total key thus being locked. When the sub-total key 49 is depressed, a link 67 is moved to the left, a projection 70 on the link rocking the lever 65 by means of a pin 71 to remove the jaw from locking engagement with the latch 64 so that the total key 29 can be depressed.
