Abstract

445,691. Cash registers. BURROUGHS ADDING MACHINE CO., 6071, 2nd Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Sept. 14, 1934, No. 26399. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1933. [Class 106 (i)] Cash drawer mechanism.-The cash drawer of a key-operated cash register is released either by depression of the keys or by the opening of a lockable lid giving access to a control lever settable to lock the machine or condition it for open or closed drawer operation. The invention is described as applied to the cash register forming the subject-matter of Specifications 445,540, 447,264 and 449,004, and provided with a cash drawer and latching means therefor forming the subject-matter of Specifications 444,246, [Group XXXIV], and 444,247, respectively. In this kind of machine, the depression of a key-lever 4 rocks a universal bail 11 counterclockwise, Fig. 2, about the key shaft 6, and permits a key coupler 19 to rock clockwise about the bail and take over a projection 26 on the depressed key. The return movement of the bail is utilized to release the cash drawer 30. The drawer is latched by a bolt 36 rockable to release the drawer and held in releasing position, while the drawer is open, by a locking arm 72. The bolt is operatively connected through a crank-arm 41 and lever 42 to a bell-crank 46, the horizontal arm 49 of which carries a byepass pawl 51 for cooperation with the bail 11. The bell-crank 46 is also rocked to release the drawer upon the opening of a lid 29 to give access to a control lever 100, a stud 62 on one of the lid hinges serving to depress a pitman 57 pivoted to the arm 49 of the bell-crank. The control lever. As shown in Fig. 2, the control lever 100 is in its intermediate or " Closed Drawer " position. In this position of the lever and with the drawer open, a hooked arm 92 of a lever 104 takes under a stud 93 of the key coupler 19 so that the latter is prevented from rocking clockwise and movement of the bail is restricted by the abutment with a stop 96 of a shoulder 94 of the coupler. Thus, operation of the machine is prevented while the drawer is open and partially depressed keys will not become coupled. Upon the closing of the drawer, a stud 81 on an arm 82 of the bell-crank 46 acts through an arm 83, resiliently connected to the lever 104, to rock the latter counterclockwise and thereby remove the hooked arm 92 from under the stud 93. The machine is now conditioned for operation. To condition the machine for " Open Drawer " operation, the control lever is rocked clockwise, an arm 102 on its lower end serving to rock the lever 104 counterclockwise to release the coupler. To lock the machine, the control lever is rocked counterclockwise, whereby an arm 106 thereon holds the lever 104 in the position shown with its hooked arm 92 below the stud 93 of the coupler.
