Abstract

442,108. Vacuum, cleaners. BERKEL, W. A. VAN, Avenue Rambert, Clarens, Montreux, Switzerland. Feb. 21,1935, Nos. 5544 and 10933. [Classes 8 (i) and 8 (ii)] [See also Group II] The dust-separator of a vacuum cleaning apparatus comprises a housing 25 entered by a suction conduit 27 through which the air is drawn upwards, a cyclone being produced by the suction above the mouth of the air inlet ; the mouth of the conduit 27 is well spaced from the casing, facilitating collection of dust which falls into a container 29. The conduit mav be surrounded by an inner hollow member 36 in which a secondary cyclone is formed. The formation of the primary cyclone is assisted by a turbine 34. The dust is further separated by filters 39. Suction is produced by a pair of pistons 12 rigidly connected and driven from a crank disc 15 operated from an electric motor through a belt pulley 19 and bevel pinion 20. In a modification, an electric motor is mounted resilientlv in a casing on the separator casing and drives a fan located above the filters ; the mouth of the suction conduit is masked by a spaced baffle. In a further modification, the hollow member 36 is closed except for a tangential inlet which produces a secondary cyclone. This hollow member may also be replaced by a rotary cylindrical gauze drum covered with filtering material, kept clean by an external pivotally mounted brush, urged into contact by a spring but blown away from the surface during operation at full speed.
