Abstract
Binding-agents for road surfaces are obtained by reacting residues from the distillation of mineral coal tar with chlorinated aliphatic compounds of high molecular weight in the presence of a condensing agent of the kind used in the Friedel-Craft reaction. The reaction may be effected at 50--200 DEG C. and organic solvents may be present. The product obtained on removing the catalyst is substantially free from chlorine, and resembles asphalt. The aliphatic material which is chlorinated and used in the reaction may be brown coal, or resinous or waxy material extracted therefrom, such as crude montan wax, or paraffin wax or residues from the distillation of oils and fatty acids, e.g. stearine pitch. The coal tar residue used may have been freed from volatile constituents by heating to 200 DEG C.
