Abstract
A reagent for use in the flotation concentration of ores, particularly non-sulphide ores such as phosphate rock, limestone, bauxite, barytes, and ilmenite, comprises a metal salt of an organic compound which comprises an aliphatic group which may be either saturated or unsaturated and has 8-18 carbon atoms and which is linked directly to a sulphato-group -O-SO3H, or to a sulphonic group -SO3H, or indirectly to an aliphatic group carrying a sulphonic group, the linkage being either -CO-O- or -CO-NH-. The aliphatic group with 8-18 carbon atoms may be for example an octyl, lauryl, myristyl, cetyl, oleyl, ricinoleyl, stearyl, or linoleyl group, and the salt used may be an ammonium salt, a salt of an alkali metal, or of an alkaline earth metal, e.g. calcium or magnesium, or of certain of the heavy metals, e.g. lead or aluminium. The reagents, which are of a soapy nature, may be used alone or with other flotation agents such as pine oil, cresol, or xanthates. The flotation may be carried out in an acid or alkaline pulp.
