Abstract
441,274. Electro-optical light valves. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, LEVIN, B., 104, Leighton Gardens, Kensal Rise, and LEVIN, N., 15, Kyverdale Road, Stamford Hill, all in London. July 13, 1934, Nos. 20621 and 22721. [Class 40 (iii)] The bi-refringent material in a Kerr cell is in a state intermediate between liquid and solid. When the material must be maintained above normal temperature to be in the nematic phase, the electrodes 1, 2 of the valve are heated by a thermostatically controlled electric heating wire 6. The valve is enclosed in a lagged chamber. Suitable materials are ethylanisalamino - cinnamate, methyl - p - - ethoxybenzalamino - alpha - methyl - cinnamate, ethyl - p - ethoxybenzalamino - alpha - methyl - cinnamate, methyl - anisalamino - alpha - methyl - cinnamate, ethyl - anisalamino - alpha - methyl - cinnamate, or the like. The material may be an aqueous solution of a substance, which is then in a mesomorphic state, and in such concentration as to be in the nematic phase at atmospheric temperatures. Such substances are 9-bromophenanthrene - 3(or 6) - sulphonic acid, m<1>-nitrobenzoyl - m - aminobenzoyl - 2 - naphthylamine - 4.8-disulphonic acid, the disodium salt of m<1> - nitrobenzoyl - m - aminobenzoyl - 2 - naphthylamine - 6 . 8 - disulphonic acid.
