[Class 51 (i)] [See also Group XXVII] In a combustion-product plant in which gases generated by the firing of a combustible charge are led through a conduit to a prime mover such as an engine, engine-starter, or launching or projecting device, a normally open exhaust valve on the conduit is closed by the operation of firing means for the charge. In one form, Fig. 1, a cartridge c is fired in a combustion chamber a communicating through a conduit f<1>, f<2> with the prime mover to be operated. A balanced valve e controlling an exhaust conduit f<3> is normally held open by a weak spring g. Breech mechanism b of the Farman pistol type is fitted with a firing-pin actuated by a trigger k on a lever i, the first movement of which causes a shoe i<1> to actuate the valve e through a spring head h to close the exhaust conduit f<3>. In the case of a sustained firing stroke, the valve e may be held automatically in the closed position by a lever and ratchet mechanism attached by means of a flexible link or otherwise to the lever i. In a modification, the breech mechanism is of the Very pistol type and an expansion chamber h is interposed between the combustion chamber a and the conduit f<1>. A grid may be arranged between the combustion and expansion chambers. A safety valve l, Figs. 8 and 9, may be fitted on the conduit f<2> leading to the prime mover, in which the pressure lifts a spring-pressed piston l<1> to uncover vent holes l<3>.
