Abstract

440,777. Lapping beariags. LOTT, C. I., 715, S. Pennsylvania Avenue, Lansing, Michigan, U.S.A. May 17, 1935, No. 14461. [Class 60] Antifriction bearings are lapped after assembly of the rollers, balls or other bearing elements in their races, by rotating one race slowly and the other rapidly and in the opposite direction in the presence of a mild abrasive material. A mechanism for carrying out the lapping comprises a cup-like member 4 carried by a shaft 7 and containing a mild abradant, for example, rouge and oil. The outer race 8 of the assembled bearing lies on the tapered surface 6 of the member 4, and the inner race ' 9 is engaged by a tapered element 12 splined to a shaft 13 ; the abradant, upon rapid rotation of the member 4 is thrown out on to the rollers 11 of the bearing. The shafts 13, 7 are driven respectively by bevelled friction wheels 23, 24 thereon adapted to be engaged by small wheels 18, 19 on a driven shaft 16 or by large wheels 21, 22 on a shaft 17, the shafts 16, 17 being moved axially so that first the outer race 8 is driven rapidly, and the inner race 9 slowly, and then vice versa, this last drive causing abradant to be thrown off the inner race and returned to the member 4. In a modification, the member 4 has a slightly inclined surface to receive the outer race, and the member on the shaft 13 has a flat conical end face to engage the inner race.
