Abstract

440,672. Testing coins. IMPERIAL TOBACCO CO. (OF GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND), Ltd., East Street, Bedminster, Bristol, and HASTED, H. C., 32, Paddock Road, Cricklewood, London. Sept. 13, 1934, Nos. 26258 and 34546. [Class 27] A coin-testing device which rejects coins without a rim and those that are thicker inside the rim than a genuine coin comprises a carrier 2, Fig. 1, pivoted on stub axles 3 and provided with an adjustable counterweight 11 which holds an angle extension 13 against a fixed stop 14. The front of the carrier is provided with a pair of arms 5, 6 forming a pocket to receive a coin 8 from a sloping guideway 1. The arm 6 is slotted to form two bars 15, 16, Fig. 4, between which is pivoted on a pin 17, a three-armed feeler 18 having a pointed detector arm 21, an operating arm 19 and a counterweight arm 20. Also pivoted in the arm 6 behind the ears 15, 16 are two bent wires 23, 24, formed with gauging points 28, medial portions 25 passing through holes in the arm 6, and tail portions 26 bent at right angles to the parts 25. The arm 19 of the feeler normally enters between the tails 26 and holds the points 28 a distance apart equal to the thickness of a genuine coin but narrower than the width of the rim. In use, a coin passing from the position 35 in the guideway 1 to the position 8 in the carrier strikes the nose 21 of the feeler which it momentarilv rotates to withdraw the arm 19 and allow the rim of the coin to pass between the gauging points. The arm 19 is returned by the counterweight 20 to close the points 28. The carrier turns under the weight of the coin and, if the coin is genuine and has got a rim, it is held by the points 28 until the arm 20 meets a fixed stop, whereupon the arm 19 is moved from between the tails 26 and the points open to allow the coin to drop into a passageway for genuine coins. If the rim is too thin, the coin, during the movement of the carrier, will drop out to a passageway for rejected coins. If the coin is too thick, the arm 19 will be unable to enter between the tails 26, to close the points 28, and such coins will also not be retained in the carrier. A wire 45 prevents coins from leaving the guideway 1 while the carrier 2 is tipping. The frame in which the carrier is. mounted may itself be mounted so as to be rocked about an axis CD, to discharge any coin that may have jammed in the carrier. The rocking is effected by pushing a button or opening a drawer or the like.
