Abstract
440,084. Sound-reproducing devices associated with optical-projection apparatus. BALBI, C. M. R., 45, Duke Street, Oxford Street, London. May 2, 1935, No. 13085. [Class 40 (ii)] [See also Groups XV and XX] A method of teaching lip reading consists in projecting a magnified image of the instructor's lips on to a screen or the like, arranged to be viewed by the pupils, and simultaneously transmitting corresponding sounds to the pupils. The lips of the instructor are brought close to an opening 3 mounted on the casing of an epidiascope 1, comprising a light source 4, mirror 5, and lens 6, whereby a magnified image of the lips is thrown on the screen 7. A microphone 10 picks up the corresponding sound, which is amplified by an amplifier 11 and is heard by the pupils with the aid of ear-phones 19. A master switch or volume control 15 is provided on the amplifier 11, and each of the ear-phones 19 is provided with a tone and volume control 18. A heat filter 14 may be provided, and a resilient pad 9 forms a rest for the instructor's face. The microphone &c. may be replaced by speaking tubes or the like.
