[Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] In a universal joint of the kind in which three drive-transmitting balls 3 slide in arcuate grooves 2<1> in a driving ball-member 2, and are also received in screw-adjustable cups 4 in a driven member 5, the latter carries on ball or roller bearings 5<1> a non-rotating steering- ring 7. The parts 2<11> of the driving ballmember between the grooves 2<1> are cut-away to reduce weight. As shown applied to driving steering-wheels 6<1> of a motor-vehicle, the ring 7 has diametrically-opposite king- pins 8, 9, journalled in a yoke 13, secured to a bearing on the fixed casing of the axle-shaft 1, by bolts 14, which pass through slots 141 in the bearing so that the vertical inclination of the wheel 6<1> can be adjusted. The wheel 61 and a brake-drum 6 are integral with or secured to the driven ring 5, and the steering- ring 7 carries the brake-shoe pivot 10 and cam 11. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the vertical inclination of the wheel increases automatically with the steering-angle. The steering-ring 7 is secured to a part-spherical bowl 19, having a slot 20 which slides over the flat sides of a flanged rectangular block 21 when the wheel is steered. The slot 20 is inclined to the horizontal and the slide-block 21 is bored eccentrically to receive the shaftbearing, so that the plane of the wheel 6<1> is caused to swing about a horizontal axis from the position 26 to the position 27, as well as about the vertical steering'axis. The wheel 61 may be a gear-wheel instead of a vehicle wheel and may be used in the gear transmission of a vehicle having more than one driving shaft.
