439,769. Cleaning cotton seed. HAIG, D. M., 429, Tower Building, Water Street, Liverpool.-(Reynell-Ware, Inc. ; Cotton Exchange Building, Memphis, Tennessee, U.S.A.) Nov. 30, 1934, No. 34390. [Class 58] [See also Group IX] Apparatus for defibrating cotton seed hulls comprises a separation chamber 10, Fig. 1, feed means 38, 39 an exhaust fan 19 connected to the chamber 10, a baffle or baffles 15, 37 located between the chamber 10 and the fan 19, discharge means 30, 31 for the hulls and means for collecting the lint. Beaters 36 extend radially from the vertical shaft 20 and the chamber 10 is formed with an annular cover 14 and a lint flue 17, the baffle 15 depending concentrically from the cover 14 and the disc 37 of greater diameter than the flue 17, being spaced from the cover 14. The shaft 20 is rotated by a motor 24. The interior of the chamber 10 is provided with a removable liner 11 of wire mesh or is otherwise roughened, while the bottom of the chamber comprises an annular screen 29 supported on an annular extension 27 of a collar 26. An annular baffle 21 depends from the bottom of the fan chamber 18. In operation cotton seed hulls in the feed shoot 38 are fed downwardly at a substantially uniform rate by a feeder 39. Heavy foreign matter is deposited on the platform 43 while the hulls are drawn back by air suction through the opening 41 into the extension 40 which discharges towards the centre of the chamber 10. The plate 37 deflects the material outwardly into the path of the beaters 36. Lint is drawn upwardly through the fan casing 18 while the waste falls through the screen 29 into the hopper 30 and is discharged through the shoots 31. In a modification the fan casing 18A, Fig. 4, is placed at one side of the centre line of the separation chamber 10 and communicates therewith through flues 45, 46. The fan and beaters are driven respectively through pulleys 48, 50 while an air opening 51, to serve the purpose of the opening 41, is formed in the member 27A diametrically opposite the shoot extension 40A.
