Abstract
439,223. Road - building machines. JAEGER MACHINE CO., 520, Dublin Avenue, Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A. April 9, 1935, Nos. 10991 and 10992. Convention dates, Nov. 15, 1934 and Dec. 31, 1934. [Class 107] A vehicular road-building machine comprises a unit having runners 1 which serve as side forms, a unit for spreading road - making material so connected with the runner unit that it may float up and down relatively thereto, and a screed member adapted to finish the road surface. In the construction shown, the runners are of considerable length and are interconnected by telescopic beams 7, 10, and 12, whereby the over-all width of the machine can be adjusted. The runners are of hollow construction and are adapted to receive the wheels 48, 49 which support the frame 32. Each pair of wheels is interconnected by spaced arms 50 embracing a vertical guide 56 secured to the runners and the spindles 51 of the wheels 48 are slidably mounted in bearings 52 on the frame 32. The arms 50 carry yokes 57 in which are mounted pivot pins 58 which slidably engage in bearings on the frame 32 ; the frame is thus free to rock about the pins 58 the rear end being guided by members 60 which are attached thereto and which embrace the beam 7. The forward end of the frame carries a hopper 36 the discharge outlet of which is provided with diverging spreading blades 44. The lower edges of the hopper and blades are disposed substantially higher than the lower edges of the runners and the discharged material is levelled by an adjustable screed carried by the runners 1 and disposed immediately behind the rear wall of the hopper. As shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the screed comprises a main central portion 74 having end guides 90 for slidably receiving channel members 89. These members are connected to supporting and adjusting mechanism carried by the runners, the mechanism consisting of a screw-threaded spindle 87 engaging in a bracket 84 secured to the runner and having a ball and socket connection 91 with the member 89. The screed has at each end a telescopic extension 79. Each extension is laterally adjustable by link mechanism 92, 96, pivoted at 93 to the frame 32 in such manner that it can be made to abut against the runner or to be spaced therefrom to permit a certain amount of material to bleed past the ends of the screed. The screed is rapidly vibrated by eccentrically disposed weights 107 on a shaft 106, Fig. 3, the shaft being mounted in bearings 105 secured to the screed and being driven by a motor 108 supported on a platform 111. Upper and lower pairs of rods 98 which are adjustable in length are attached to the rear face of the screed by means of which the screed may be tilted. The material which bleeds past the screed is levelled by a pair of auxiliary screeds adjustably mounted at the rear end of the machine. Each auxiliary screed comprises a plate 14 having a pin and slot connection with the beam 7, a second plate 16 telescopically connected by rods 24 and guides 26 with the plate 14, and a longitudinal delineating plate having a pin and slot connection 16<a> with the plate 16. The length of each screed is adjusted by a lever 27 pivoted at 28 to the plate 14 and having a pin-and-slot connection 29 with one of the rods 24 which is welded to the plate 16, and vertical adjustment of the screed is effected by a screw-threaded shaft 19 connected to the plate 14 and passing through a portion 6 of the runner. During transport the machine is supported entirely upon the wheels 48, 49. To effect this, the runners are raised by cables 65, 66, which are resiliently connected to the runners and which pass around pulleys 67, 68, to a winding drum 62. In another construction, Fig. 11 (not shown), several details are modified. The spreading unit is supported upon the runners by resilient suspension means adjacent each wheel, and the spreading blades 44 are replaced by a rotary screw-spreading and beating member which acts to feed the material laterally to both sides of the machine. The vibrating device for the screed consists of a weight eccentrically mounted on a shaft journalled in a casing secured to the screed. The screed itself is of modified construction and is provided with vertically adjustable end gates which can be raised to permit the material to pass to the auxiliary screeds.
