[Class 70] [See also Group XI] In an electrically-heated vulcanizer of the type comprising a casing having one side enclosed by the vulcanizing mould or plate and containing heating elements spaced from said mould with an intermediate air layer, a draught box or means for air admission, positioned at the bottom of said casing, a vent for escape of air, and adjustable means for wholly or partially intercepting the air leaving said vent are provided. A vulcanizer for the segmental retreading of tyres comprises a U-shaped metal mould 1 forming part of a casing enveloped in lagging 7. An electric heating element 9 is uniformly spaced from the mould while an element 10 or " booster," of higher heating capacity, and an element 11 or " wallbooster " are arranged relatively to the element 9 as shown. The booster 10 is used for preheating while the wall-booster is employed for reducing the heat transfer to the walls. A draught box 17 and vent 19 provided with a slidable cover 21 permit of the production of a convection air current through the casing. Openings 14, 15 in the lagging permit radiation from the mid-portion of the apparatus through apertures 16 the area of which may be variable. The mould 1 is formed with ridges 23 serving as radiating surfaces and to receive the tyre clamps 24. The lagging on the top of the casing formed by the mould may also be in the form of covers 25 adjustable in slides 26. A movable lining or matrix fits within the mould 1 and receives the tyre. By substituting matrices of different thicknesses, tyres of varying tread widths can be treated. To vary the length of the segment cured, the mould is formed with a stepped portion 28 at one or both ends. The space between the matrix and the portion 28 can be filled with metal fillets of various lengths. Moreover, a break may be formed in the matrix, the separate portion being held in a bracket. A thermometer opening 29 is provided. A cover for the mould is provided when no tyre is in position. The current to the elements 10 and 11 may be automatically cut off at the desired time by means of a time switch or thermostat.
