Abstract
438,873. Screw sockets. HALL & KAY, Ltd., HALL, S., and KAY, H., Stockport Road, Ashton-under-Lyne. Feb. 16, 1934, No. 5125. [Class 89 (i)] A metal socket, bush, ferrule, or the like for mounting in wood or other material is provided with a screw - threaded bore 13, a passage of smaller diameter, saw cuts 15 which extend into the threaded portion of the bore, and a slotted countersunk head 12. The inner and outer ends of the exterior are provided with quickly-pitched screws or other projections 17 of greater diameter than the hole 18, which are separated by a plain portion 20. When the socket is used in blind holes, the exterior of the inner end has circumferential teeth or other projections 22. The socket is first driven home in the hole by a screw-driver or hammer ; the inner end is then spread outwards by a tool 23, Fig. 11, comprising a cylindrical thread ending in a conical part which engages the shoulders 26 and spread the split end. The tool shown in Fig. 10 is used to hold the socket which may be finally secured by liquid wood, or a mixture of cement and powdered stone when used in blind holes. When the bore is not provided with a screw thread, the spreading of the divided end may be effected by driving down a punch-like tool with a tapered end.
