Abstract

438,672. Receivers, transmitters, &c. GEMANT, A., 4b, Staverton Road, Oxford. July 24, 1934, No. 21691. [Class 40 (iv)] In an electrostatic instrument for the conversion of acoustic or other compressional vibrations in a fluid medium into electrical vibrations or vice versa, the electrostatic field is constituted by the surface field of one or more electrets. As shown, an electret disc 1 is clamped with its negatively-charged face against the wall 2 of a welded metallic casing 2, 3. This face of the electret disc 2 is metallized to ensure a good contact. An aluminium diaphragm 4 is secured in the casing opposite the positivelycharged face of the electret and a metal grid 5 or a perforated disc, insulated from the casing, is interposed between the electret and the diaphragm. The grid or disc 5 may be formed by metallizing the surface of the electret. The grid and the casing are connected in an external circuit, and movement of the diaphragm varies the ratio of the capacities between electret and grid, and between electret and casing, and so varies the current in the circuit. The casing is hermetically sealed and the interior dried.
