[Classes 75 (i) and 126] For removing coating-materials such as paint from metal and like fireproof surfaces, e.g. street lamp and tramway standards, railings, ships' sides, girders or beams, the object or surface to be treated is surrounded or covered by a stove which is provided with a series of burners located over its surface so that all parts of the object are heated sufficiently to burn or melt the old coating of material. In the form shown in Fig. 3, a lamppost a is surrounded by a casing c in two halves made of plain or corrugated sheet material. The two halves are provided with two or more hoop bands d with radial parts d<1> which form handles and around which chains may be coiled to hold the two halves together. The burners fare formed of pads of silicate of cotton, asbestos, slag wool, or cotton or cotton waste, or other material contained in openwork casings of wire-netting bolted to the casing. The pads are soaked with paraffin or the like. Air holes g are provided. An adjustable damper h at the top of the stove comprises two plates with opposed slots placed around the neck of the lamp standard. A separate sleeve j and absorbent pad burner f are provided for the ladder arm a2. For tramway and like tall standards, the casing may be telescopic or applied successively to different parts. For railings, the apparatus as shown in Fig. 13 comprises a casing q with a detachable front s and a series of vertical burner pads f. The casing sections may be doublewalled, with an intermediate layer of asbestos, mill board, slag wool or other nonconducting material. One or more scrapers or brushes may be combined with the furnace.
