[Class 103 (i)] In brake drums for internal shoes, particularly such having cast iron linings, ventilating passages are provided within the rim which lead from a point on a lateral face of the rim to another point on the opposite lateral face or on the external periphery, said other point being at a greater distance from the drum axis than the first point so that air is caused to circulate by centrifugal force in a unilateral flow from the first point to the second point. According to Figs. 1 and 2, the lining 3 attached as by bolts 5 to the outer member 1 secured to the disc 2 of a wheel has a number of annular chambers 6 connected by transverse passages 7 or slots 9 and communicating with apertures 8 in the member 1. The apertures 8 may be disposed close together or further apart and they may be radially inclined as shown respectively in Fig. 2, A, B, C. The chambers 6 may be dispensed with. Under the action of centrifugal force, air enters the passages 7 or 9 and escapes through the apertures 8. The passages 7, 9 may be inclined to the drum axis so that the centrifugal action is supplemented by the effect of inertia of the air. The lining may also be provided with holes or slots running from one lateral face to the other and inclined to the drum axis in such a way that air enters at one face and leaves at the other under the action of centrifugal force. The outer member 1 may be slotted axially so as to grip the lining elastically or it may be in separate segments. The member 1 and the outer surface of the lining may be conical.
