Abstract

Glutamine is obtained by converting g -esters of glutamic acid which are substituted by the radicle COOR (where R is an organic radicle) on the nitrogen atom, into amides by treatment with ammonia or amines, and treating the products with hydrogen. The said initial materials are obtained by treating the g -esters of glutamic acid with chlorocarbonic esters of alcohols. These are converted into amides with liquid ammonia, for example, followed by treatment with hydrogen preferably in presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. The amides may also be obtained by converting the g -ester into the hydrazide with hydrazine, followed by treating with nitrous acid to convert to the azide, followed by treatment with ammonia. According to examples, the N-carbobenzoxy-d-glutamic-g -ethyl ester is treated with: (1) liquid ammonia followed by hydrogen in presence of palladium catalyst, or with (2) anhydrous hydrazine, followed by treatment of the hydrazide obtained with nitrous acid, and of this product with ammonia, followed by reduction of the product with hydrogen and catalysts. The product obtained is d-glutamine.
