[Class 12 (i)] In a jewel bearing for measuring - instruments such as electricity meters, the bearing plate 5 is cut or ground from a natural or artificial stone of the alumina group in such a way that its optical axis 6 lies perpendicular to the direction of pressure on the bearing surface, in which direction the resistance of the plate to wear by friction is a maximum. Sapphires, rubies or corundum may be used. Where the moving part 3 of the bearing is also of a natural or artificial precious stone of the alumina group, it is also orientated so that its optical axis 4 is perpendicular to the direction of the bearing pressure. In the Figure, the moving part 3 of the bearing is in the form of a ball mounted in a setting 2 at the lower end of an electricity meter spindle 1.
