[Class 94 (ii)] A method of forming satchel bottom bags consists in folding a continuous web of paper &c. about a flat former having its forward end bifurcated to form spaced parallel former plates, simultaneously tucking in the corners of the forward end of the tube into the space between the former plates, advancing the tube, and cutting off the forward part of the tube having the tucked-in corners so as to form a bag blank and then completing the manufacture of said blank into a finished bag. A web 20 from a roll 21 is fed by rolls 36, 37, 38, past a folding device 25, 26, 31, 32, an edge being gummed at 24, to a reciprocable former plate 30 with a bifurcated forward end 61, 62, around which it is formed into a lapped tube, the rolls 36, 37, 38 acting on the tube of material through cut-outs in the former plate. This latter is mounted on a spring- biassed carriage 46 on a track 47 and is reciprocated by cam-and-lever mechanism 54, 52, 50. Tucker blades 75, mounted on a spring- biassed carriage 78, and reciprocating on the track 47 by an oscillating shaft 84, effect the tucking in of the bag tube corners between the former plate portions 61, 62 when a crossbar 82 actuates them by contacting with rollers 81 mounted thereon. Further feed rollers 90, 91 operating at the same speed as the rolls 36, 37, 38, grip the folded-in tip of the bag tube blank directly it is cut from the tube by a blade 97 carried by a roller 96 and actuated by a cam 101 through a spring biassed lever 99, forward the blank to ironing rolls 112, 111, suction rolls 113, 114 for opening the two superposed triangular flaps and rolls 120, 121 which apply gum patches 124/125, by means of pads 122, 123, on the opened flaps and crease them at 131, 143 by means of blades 130, 142. A gripper device 132 grips and folds over the tip of flap 106 and the partly folded bag is then fed by a roller 140 gapped at 141 to clear the gum patch 125, to a pair of belts 150, 151 where the bottom portion is completed by a blade 160 on an oscillating arm 161, which folds over the tip of flap 105 on to already folded portions.
