[Class 5 (i)] [See also Group VIII] A tobacco-cutting machine, of the type having intermeshing rotary cutter discs comprises resilient spacing elements in the form of strips wound upon the cores between the discs. For assembling the cutters, the cores 18 are mounted on parallel spindles 42, geared together at 43 : parallel to the spindles 42 are vertically adjustable rods 46. Cutter discs 19 are mounted alternately on the cores 18, notches on the discs engaging feathers 49 on the cores, and, between successive discs 19 on each core, an auxiliary spacing disc 48 is mounted on the corresponding rod 46. The spindles 42 are then rotated and a sheet of cork is fed from above the cutters, the strips formed by the cutting discs being wound on the cores 18 by frictional engagement with the discs. The convolutions of the strips are pressed together and to the cores by adjustment of the discs 48 and may be caused to unite by applying adhesive to the sheet of cork. For transferring the cutters to the cutting machine, a holder, comprising a base 52 having handles 51 and concave surfaces 53 to which base is clamped a member 54 having a similar arrangement of concaves 55, is employed. The rods 46 and auxiliary spacing discs 48 may be mounted in the cutting-machine.
