Abstract
437,036. Coating granular materials. HUTCHISON, T., 67, Green, Aberdeen, and SCOTTISH AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Council Chambers Buildings, Charlotte Street, Leith, Midlothian. April 23, 1934, No. 12231. [Class 58] [See also Group II] The granular material, such as grain, is contained in a hopper 9 provided with an adjustable outlet valve 12 and the powder with which it is to be coated is contained in a cylinder 10 mounted on a pivot 14 so that it can be swung to the dotted line position for filling. The grain and the powder are fed simultaneously to a rotating mixing drum by a rotary brush 11 or similar star feed device. The shaft of this brush is driven through a pulley and yielding clutch from the shaft of the mixing drum which is itself rotated by power or by a hand crank 6. The powder contained in the cylinder 10 is fed forward positively by a piston 13 carried at the end of a screwed rod passing through a nut rotated by a bevel gearing connection to a ratchet wheel adapted to be given a step by step forward movement by a pawl the far end of which is pivoted to a crank pin carried by the pulley on the end of the brush shaft. The throw of the crank pin is adjustable to vary the rate of feed. A stop 28 locks the piston against further movement when the powder has been forced out of the cylinder and so causes the driving clutch to slip.
