Abstract
437,027. Firearms; barrels. WILDERMAN, P., 80A, Erpingham Road, Putney, London. April 23, 1934, No. 12136. [Classes 92 (ii) and 119] A firearm is provided with a closed pressure-relief chamber, cavity, or groove, between the position of the rear end of the bearing surface of a projectile in the chamber of the gun barrel before discharge and the position of the rear end of said surface when the propellent would develop maximum, excessive, or undesirable pressure, having a direct communication with the bore of the barrel and having such a size and position as to give the requisite increase in space behind the projectile as required for the reduction of the pressure to a safe and desirable degree. The chamber may be formed by an enlargement, or enlargements, of the groove bore, or by a laterally disposed hollow 9, which may be closed by a screw plug 11 and may be sealed in various ways, for example by a thimble 10 resembling an empty cartridge case, serving also to adjust the size of the chamber. The orifice 8 of the chamber may be lined with a permanent or replaceable lining 10<a> of high melting point to reduce erosion. Several such chambers may be arranged in succession. Specifications 164,697, [Class 92 (ii)], and 379,202 are referrred to as prior examples of gun barrels provided with expansion chambers.
