Abstract

<PICT:0436003/IV/1> Self-supporting hollow windings or packs of artificial thread are washed and treated by sucking water or a treating liquid through a number of packs C threaded in superimposed relationship on a vertical perforated tube A which lies closely against the inner surfaces of the packs and is open at its upper end, a closure being maintained at the upper end of the column by means of an imperforate tube B which is closed at its upper end, fits closely over the tube A and is held with its lower end pressed against the topmost pack owing to the reduced pressure within the perforated tube, so that it follows the contraction of the column. After being treated with the liquid, the packs may be dried while threaded on the perforated tube. The outer tube B may be fitted at its upper end with a lightly-fitting lid carrying a manometer. In operation, the tubes A are tightened at the lower ends in openings of the washing tank, using packing plates or rings of soft rubber, and the tank is filled with washing water and, as the process of purification proceeds, with the different after-treating liquids, the liquids being sucked through the packs and perforations of the tube A. As the length of the columns of packs diminishes the outer tubes B follow this movement and seal the tubes A against entry of the washing and treating liquids except through the packs and perforations. The tubes are made preferably of lacquered aluminium or artificial resin capable of resisting corrosion or of acid-proof metal. After the liquid treatment the packs are dried on the tubes by sucking or blowing heated air therethrough. The packs may be wound round with some threads or wrapped up in permeable cloths prior to threading on the tubes, and they may be separated by permeable or impermeable rings of tissues, rubber, or the like. The process of treating threads is stated to be particularly useful for packs wound from bottom to top, as described in Specification 434,881, but may also be applied to centrifugal cakes wherein the layers of thread are piled inwardly.
